Garnets are found in an array of shades of red ; from pale through to orange and deep red (which are the most common) though even green and black garnets have been found. Ours are the colour of a fine Port, a deep velvety red.
Garnet is the birthstone for January, and the name comes from the Latin and means grainy or granular from it's appearance when mined raw.
Rubies are one of the best known gemstones, and are from the same family as sapphires - corundum. Although the perception is that rubies are always blood red, they can occur in many shades of red. Often called the KIng of Gemstones, "ruby" comes from the latin for Red, and its the second hardest mineral known to us (diamond being the first and spinels the third).
Sapphires are the blue brothers of rubies, the same family, just different metal oxides providing the colour. In fact to be accurate red sapphires are called rubies, and any other colour is a sapphire and different shades can be found. Associated with loyaly, faithfulness, friendship and cool logic, sapphires are the most loved gemstone worldwide (statistically speaking).
